Save a readable answer format in ChatGPT

Use custom instructions to ask for a consistent structure. Check whether ChatGPT follows it with a small test.

Before you start

Custom instructions are available on all plans across web, desktop, iOS and Android. This is a supported preference feature. The reading format below is our suggested use, not a guaranteed accessibility mode.

Save your preference

  1. Open Settings in ChatGPT.
  2. On web or desktop, select Personalization. On mobile, select Customize ChatGPT.
  3. Turn Enable customization on.
  4. Enter the suggested instruction below in Custom Instructions.
  5. Start a small test chat.

Suggested instruction

Start with the answer in two sentences. Use descriptive headings and short paragraphs. Give numbered steps for tasks, with one action per step. Avoid wide tables unless I ask for one. Keep dates, amounts and conditions unchanged. Say when you are unsure.

Check the format

Use this sample task: “Explain how to prepare for a ten-minute meeting.” Look for a short opening and individual steps. If the answer is still too long, ask for three steps only. Keep the version you can read or listen to comfortably.

If the preference is ignored

Check that customization is on. Repeat the required format in your next message. To undo the preference, turn customization off or remove the instruction. Previous answers are not rewritten.

Availability and limits

AI can ignore formatting preferences and still make factual errors. Describe the format you need without adding personal or medical details. Clear visual formatting does not prove that headings work correctly with your screen reader; check your actual reading experience.
