Practical guide
Listen to ChatGPT and keep the text
Use Voice when typing takes effort, then check the written answer before using a date, name or instruction.
Based on product documentation. Examples and suggested prompts are editorial advice.
Before you start
Use ChatGPT on the web, iOS or Android with microphone access. Available Voice modes depend on your account, plan, region, app version and workspace settings.
Start a short conversation
- Select the Voice icon beside the message field.
- Allow microphone access if prompted.
- Ask a small question, such as how to organise three notes.
- Ask for a short answer.
- End the conversation with the exit control.
- Open the chat and review the text.
Follow the spoken answer
In Live, responses appear as text while they are spoken. In Advanced on iOS and Android, use the cc button for captions of ChatGPT’s responses. These are different experiences; the same caption button is not present in every mode.
Try this request
Explain this in three short sentences. Then put the steps in writing so I can check them.
If speaking or listening fails
Check microphone permission and device volume. If the conversation keeps interrupting you, switch to typed input. Ask for a written answer if audio is difficult to follow. You can also ask for a slower response, without assuming an exact playback speed.
Availability and limits
Voice has usage limits. Its transcript may differ from what was actually said. Treat the text as a reference to check, not a verbatim recording. Review account data controls before discussing sensitive information.
